Australia Skilled Migration Points Calculator Explained

June 25, 2026 · 11 min read

Australia's skilled migration program is points-based. You need a minimum of 65 points to submit an Expression of Interest under subclasses 189 (Skilled Independent), 190 (State Nominated) and 491 (Regional). In practice, invitations in 2026 usually go to candidates well above 65 — often 90 or more in high-demand occupations.

Age contributes up to 30 points. The sweet spot is 25 to 32 years old (30 points). Points reduce after 33 and drop to zero after 44.

English language ability contributes up to 20 points: Competent English (IELTS 6 across all bands) is 0 points, Proficient (IELTS 7) is 10 points, and Superior (IELTS 8) is 20 points. Moving from 7 to 8 is often the difference between waiting years and being invited.

Skilled employment overseas contributes up to 15 points (10 or more years). Skilled employment in Australia contributes up to 20 points (8 or more years). Combined work experience is capped at 20 points.

Qualifications contribute up to 20 points: a doctorate is 20, a bachelor's or master's is 15, and a diploma or trade qualification is 10. Australian study of two years or more adds 5 points.

Additional points come from a partner (up to 10 points based on their skills and English), professional year in Australia (5 points), specialist STEM qualification (10 points), regional study (5 points), and community language accreditation (5 points).

State nomination adds 5 points for subclass 190 and 15 points for subclass 491. Nominations are competitive and each state publishes its own occupation list annually.

The first step is a positive skills assessment from the assessing authority for your occupation. This can take one to four months and is required before you can submit an EOI.
