How Much Bank Balance Is Needed for a Visa Application
June 10, 2026 · 8 min read
There is no single number that guarantees a visa approval. Financial thresholds vary by destination, duration of stay, and purpose of travel. What every consulate looks for is the same underlying pattern: stable, unrestricted funds that comfortably cover the trip and support the story your application tells.
For short-stay tourist visas to Schengen countries, the working guideline in 2026 is fifty to eighty euros per day of stay, held in a personal account for the last three to six months. A ten-day trip therefore usually needs about five hundred to eight hundred euros minimum, ideally with a comfortable buffer above that.
For the United States, there is no fixed dollar threshold. Consular officers look for financial capacity in the context of your overall profile — a stable salary, ongoing income, and no sudden deposits.
For the United Kingdom, six months of statements showing steady balance and salary credits are the gold standard. Large recent deposits without explanation are the single most common cause of financial-evidence refusals.
For Canadian visitor visas, IRCC does not publish a fixed threshold. Show enough to cover flights, accommodation, food and incidentals for the full stay, ideally with a comfortable margin.
For student visas the threshold is defined and non-negotiable — one year of tuition plus a set annual living cost figure. The exact number differs by country and city.
Three rules that apply everywhere: do not deposit a lump sum right before applying, do not use a family member's statement without a documented sponsorship declaration and relationship proof, and do not close a supporting account before the visa is issued.
