Canada Express Entry 2026: CRS Score, Draws, Timeline

Express Entry is Canada's main pathway for skilled workers seeking permanent residence. It is not a visa itself — it is a management system for three programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.

You create a profile, receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and enter the pool. Every one to three weeks, the government issues an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to candidates above a cut-off score. From ITA to permanent residence typically takes about six months.

Your CRS score is built from age, education, language ability, work experience, and additional factors like a provincial nomination, a Canadian job offer, French proficiency, Canadian study experience, or a sibling in Canada. Maximum score with a provincial nomination is 1200.

In 2026, general draws typically require scores above the mid-500s, but category-based draws in healthcare, STEM, trades, transport, agriculture, and French-language proficiency often invite candidates with scores in the 400s. Choosing the right category can cut your effective threshold by 100 points.

Language testing is the single biggest lever most candidates can pull. Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in English adds roughly 50 to 100 points depending on your profile. A French test in addition to English can add another 50 points through the bilingual bonus.

Education Credential Assessments (ECAs) from designated organisations are required for degrees earned outside Canada. Book yours before creating the profile — an ECA can take one to four months.

Documents to gather in advance: passport, ECA report, language test results (IELTS General, CELPIP or TEF Canada valid for two years), proof of work experience with detailed reference letters, proof of funds meeting the settlement requirement, and police certificates from every country lived in for six months or more since age 18.

After receiving an ITA you have 60 days to submit a complete electronic Application for Permanent Residence. Missing this window forfeits the invitation and you return to the pool.
