Canada Visitor Visa (TRV) 2026: Full Application Guide

July 2, 2026 · 10 min read

A Canada Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is required for citizens of most non-visa-exempt countries who wish to visit Canada for tourism, family visits, or short business trips. The standard TRV is a multi-entry visa valid for up to ten years or until the passport expires — whichever comes first.

You qualify if you can show you have a valid travel document, sufficient funds to cover your stay, no criminal or immigration record that would make you inadmissible, and strong ties that guarantee your return home.

Core documents in 2026: passport with at least one blank page, digital photo meeting IRCC specifications, completed IMM 5257 form, purpose of travel letter, proof of funds (typically bank statements covering the last four to six months), employment letter, and a detailed itinerary.

For visitors joining family, an invitation letter from the Canadian host, proof of the host's status in Canada, and evidence of the relationship are essential. If the host is contributing funds, their financial documents are also required.

Biometrics are mandatory for most first-time applicants and are valid for ten years. Book your biometrics appointment at the nearest Visa Application Centre as soon as your file is submitted online.

Processing times fluctuate. In 2026, typical processing runs from a few weeks to a few months depending on the country of residence and volume at that visa office. Priority processing exists for certain categories.

Common refusal reasons: insufficient ties to home country, financial situation deemed inadequate for the trip, purpose of visit not clearly established, and prior immigration history concerns. Every refusal comes with GCMS notes that can be requested to understand exactly why.
