First-Time Cruise Guide: What Nobody Tells You

March 22, 2026 · 9 min read

Cruises are polarising because most first-timers pick the wrong ship. Match the line to your travel style, not the price.

Party crowd? Royal Caribbean, Norwegian.

Adults-only, elegant? Virgin Voyages.

Luxury, all-inclusive? Silversea, Regent.

River cruises (Douro, Danube, Nile)? Viking or Uniworld.

Cabin category matters more than deck. Balcony cabins are worth the upgrade on scenic itineraries.

Tipping is prepaid on some lines and not others — check before you book, or you'll get a surprise on the last night.

Motion sickness? Book mid-ship, low deck, and wear scopolamine patches from day zero.

Concierge tip: skip the ship's shore excursions in ports where independent tours are much cheaper (Naples, Cozumel, Barcelona).
