International Travel Insurance: Cover Limits That Matter
June 2, 2026 · 8 min read
Travel insurance policies are sold on price. They are consumed on cover limits. The number on the sticker matters far less than the sub-limits inside the policy, and those sub-limits are where most claims are underpaid.
Medical emergencies are the single most important line. For Europe, aim for at least one hundred thousand euros of medical cover. For North America and remote destinations, aim for a minimum of two hundred and fifty thousand US dollars.
Medical evacuation is a separate line and is often capped much lower than the headline medical figure. Air ambulance repatriation from remote destinations can exceed one hundred thousand US dollars. Make sure the evacuation limit is at least half the medical limit.
Trip cancellation and interruption cover reimburses non-refundable bookings if you cancel or curtail for a covered reason. Read the covered-reasons list — bereavement, illness, jury duty and severe weather are standard; work commitments and change of mind are not, unless you buy a Cancel For Any Reason upgrade.
Baggage cover is usually low and comes with per-item caps. High-value items (laptops, cameras, jewellery) often need to be scheduled individually or covered under a separate gadget policy.
Adventure activities are the most common exclusion. Scuba below thirty metres, motorcycles above 125cc, off-piste skiing and any competitive sport are commonly excluded unless the policy specifically names them as covered.
Pre-existing medical conditions must be declared. Undeclared conditions void the policy entirely — even for unrelated claims.
