Passport Renewal & Travel Document Checklist for 2026
May 20, 2026 · 8 min read
Most travellers only think about their passport when a trip is imminent, and that is exactly when problems appear. A short pre-trip audit of every travel document weeks in advance prevents almost every avoidable delay.
The six-month rule: most countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of departure from that country. Some are stricter and require validity for the full duration of stay plus six months. Check the destination's rule before booking.
Blank pages: many destinations require at least two blank visa pages. Endorsement pages and amendment pages do not count.
Photograph specifications vary by country but share common rules: recent (usually within the last six months), plain white or off-white background, neutral facial expression, no glasses, no head covering unless for religious reasons, and correct dimensions. Rejected photos are the single most common cause of application delays.
Name matching: the name on every booking must exactly match the name on the passport. Middle names, hyphens and accents are checked. Correct any mismatch before travel — airlines increasingly enforce this at check-in.
Renewal timeline: allow at least eight to twelve weeks for a standard passport renewal in most countries, longer in peak season. Expedited services exist but are country-specific.
Beyond the passport: check visa expiry dates for any residency permit, driving licence validity if you plan to hire a car, international driving permit where required, vaccination certificates, and insurance policy dates.
Store colour scans of every document in a secure, encrypted vault accessible from your phone. A physical copy of the passport photo page kept in a separate bag has saved more travellers than any single other precaution.
