Study in Canada Without IELTS: Accepted Alternatives 2026
June 15, 2026 · 9 min read
IELTS is the most common English proficiency test for Canadian universities, but it is not the only one. In 2026 many Canadian institutions accept a range of alternative tests and, in specific circumstances, a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from a prior institution.
The most widely accepted IELTS alternatives are TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, CAEL and CanTEST. Score requirements vary by program, but a rough equivalence to IELTS 6.5 is required for most undergraduate programs and IELTS 7.0 for graduate programs.
The Duolingo English Test has become widely accepted since the pandemic and is significantly cheaper and faster than IELTS. Many Canadian universities now accept scores of 115 to 125 as equivalent to IELTS 6.5 to 7.0.
Medium of Instruction letters can waive the language test entirely at some universities, particularly for applicants whose most recent full academic qualification was taught in English. The letter must come from the awarding institution and specifically confirm English as the medium of instruction across the entire program.
Some universities offer conditional admission followed by a pathway English program on arrival. This is a legitimate route if your test scores fall slightly short — the offer is conditional on passing the internal language course before the main degree begins.
For a Canadian study permit, IRCC generally requires the same language proof the university accepted. If you enter Canada under a conditional offer with a pathway program, your study permit is issued to cover both stages.
Common issues in 2026: MOI letters that do not meet the university's exact wording, Duolingo tests taken in an environment that fails their proctoring rules, and confusion between institutional exemptions and IRCC requirements.
