Study in the UK 2026: Requirements, Costs, Post-Study Work

June 12, 2026 · 10 min read

The UK remains one of the most popular destinations for international students. In 2026 the Student Route visa, formerly Tier 4, continues to underpin most international enrolments and the Graduate Route still allows most graduates to remain in the UK for two years after study (three years for PhDs).

Entry requirements vary by university and program, but the core structure is consistent: an unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor, evidence of English language ability, proof of funds for the first year of tuition plus living costs, and a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

English language: usually IELTS Academic 6.0 to 7.0 depending on the program, or an accepted alternative such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or an internal university test. Some programs accept a Medium of Instruction letter.

Tuition in 2026: undergraduate international fees typically fall between fifteen and thirty thousand pounds per year for humanities and business, and higher for STEM and medicine. Master's fees are similar. Living cost requirements for the visa depend on whether you study inside or outside London.

Proof of funds must be held in a personal or parental account for at least 28 consecutive days. Loans from an approved lender also qualify if formally documented.

Application steps: apply to universities via UCAS (undergraduate) or directly (postgraduate), accept an offer, receive the CAS, complete the online visa application, pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, submit biometrics and documents at a visa application centre.

The Graduate Route allows most students to stay in the UK for two years after completing an eligible course to work or look for work. It is a genuine bridge to sponsored employment and long-term settlement.
