Travel Insurance Explained: What Actually Gets Covered
May 1, 2026 · 7 min read
Travel insurance is the single most under-read document travellers buy. Here's what you actually get.
Medical emergencies: the biggest reason to have insurance. Look for at least €100,000 in medical cover in Europe, $250,000+ in the US.
Trip cancellation: reimburses non-refundable bookings if you cancel for a covered reason (illness, bereavement, jury duty). 'Cancel for any reason' add-ons cost 40% more.
Baggage: usually £1,000–£3,000. Claims are painful — keep receipts.
Adventure activities: check the small print. Scuba below 30m, motorbikes over 125cc, and off-piste skiing are commonly excluded.
Pre-existing conditions: declare them. Undeclared conditions void the entire policy.
